Summary
I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree, and a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree, after which I spent the majority of my career working in acute medicine, cardiology and respiratory medicine, and psychiatry.
Today, I am passionate about building sustainable brands, and blending my knowledge of western medicine with eastern yogic principles, wellness and lifestyle medicine. My view is that by incorporating appropriate holistic preventative strategies, we can improve the health of individuals and our communities by reducing the need for more intensive medical, pharmaceutical and surgical interventions.
Having recently developed a love for Iyengar Yoga, I am now enjoying a deep self-learning phase around yoga, its many sub-specialities and its philosophy.

Early Life
My interest in performance medicine started when I suffered from a persistent Achilles tendon injury whilst playing professional youth cricket, and a lecture on sports psychology towards the end of my sporting career pushed me towards appreciating the benefits of personal development.
My awareness of the need to live and act in a sustainable manner organically evolved through reading newspapers and magazines. My favourites being The New Scientist, National Geographic and The Economist.
Medical Career (2005 to 2016)
I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2010 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree. I also received a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree, which involved a project around genetic sequencing in developing chick embryos.
I then spent 6 years working full time within the UK’s public healthcare system, the NHS. The majority of my time was spent working in hospitals as a junior doctor in acute medicine, cardiology and respiratory medicine, and psychiatry.
Business Career (2016 to present)
From a young age and having grown up around a first-generation immigrant entrepreneurial community, I have always had the desire to start a business. There were also elements of western medicine which I didn’t agree with, most noticeably, the approach to end of life care.
I then tried to start a couple of medical businesses. One was trying to install iPads in ambulances to prevent elderly admissions overnight. This project had many obstacles and looking back, I was probably too young and early in my career to launch a virtual medicine service, especially since guidelines surrounding this were being formulated. There were some hard hitting lessons learnt from this phase.
In 2016, I joined our family business and began to focus the majority of my efforts to setting up our pure natural fibre knitwear brand, Paul James Knitwear. Our brand is growing, and it has been built through difficult times as our business involves manufacturing, wholesale and retail risk. Nonetheless, it has been a huge learning curve, one which I am very grateful for, and it has conditioned me well for the future.
We employ 105 people across our two factories, and my ethos of building a ‘Business Family’ is what I am passionate about developing with our employees, customers and suppliers. I am proud of what we have achieved, and I believe we are creating a timeless, successful brand because our repeat customer rate is high, and we are able to sell our products at honest prices.
Currently I’m working on my second brand, Meditate On, which is about celebrating the Art of Mastery and a Peak Performance Wellness Brand. Our mission is to blend eastern philosophies with western lifestyle to optimise our clients health.
My Yogic Journey (2018 – present)
I dived deeper into yoga when I was going through a difficult time in both my business and personal life. I have always been attracted to ancient teachings and philosophies, for me reading about Stoicism, and then more about Yoga drew me into a deeper path of practising Yoga and Meditation and living life with gratitude at the heart of it.
Recently I enjoyed a trip to Rishikesh, India where I found my love for Iyengar Yoga, and currently I am going deep into a self-learning phase around yoga, its many sub-specialities and its philosophy.
Lifestyle Medicine Advocate (2020 onwards)
My approach to improving health is more about technique, form and recovery. This is achieved through delivering a gradual blend of knowledge and physical practice aimed at demonstrating ‘the why’ in bitesize pieces. The one thing I learnt from western medicine is that doctors would love to spend more time with their patients, but this isn’t possible. What I learnt from business is the importance of marketing, which is the art of explaining why you exist, and understanding that this takes time to communicate.
This is why I call myself a lifestyle doctor, as I feel with holistic preventative strategies, implemented and reinforced at correct intervals we can improve the health of individuals and communities by reducing the need for more intensive medical, pharmaceutical or surgical interventions.
