Summer Knitwear: Our Yarn Guide

Summer isn't usually the time of year we associate with knitwear. But the unpredictability of English weather, and the intelligent properties of natural fibres like merino wool, cashmere and cotton, mean that knitted garments are great for breathable layers that provide incredible comfort, no matter what the season. Made from 100% natural fibres, and sourced from the world's most prestigious suppliers, our knitwear is designed with this in mind. In this blog post, we're exploring the unique properties of some of our favourite fibres for the warmer months!

Cotton

Probably the most well recognised already as an ideal fibre for warmer weather, cotton is soft, breathable, and cool. It's a skin-friendly fibre that's perfect for those with sensitive skin and allergies. Its hollow fibres make this yarn perfect all year round and its durability means it's easy to care for, withstanding everyday wear and tear. Cotton can only be grown in tropical climates, and we work directly with Indian based spinners, from here our cotton knitwear is manufactured in our family-run factory in India.

Chunky cotton knitwear is ideal for layering over your shoulders to create a timeless preppy look. It also makes for a warm layer, great for when the sun goes down after an evening BBQ.

Lightweight cotton knitwear is perfect for wearing close to the skin, thanks to the hollow cellulose fibres of the yarn, which keep you feeling cool.

Merino wool

Known as a fibre for all year around, merino wool is well-used as a breathable, moisture-wicking base layer for those who love winter sports. And with its intelligent thermo-regulating properties, it's actually a great fibre for summer too! We source our extra-fine merino wool from the finest Italian mills, Zegna Baruffa (Est. 1850) and Lanerossi (Est. 1817).

Our extra-fine merino knitwear is ideal if you're looking for a breathable garment suited for warmer days. With a silky soft texture, merino wool in many ways doesn't feel like wool. It's not coarse, itchy or heavy, and its aforementioned thermo-regulating properties make it ideal for keeping you feeling cool and comfortable on even the most balmy days.

Merino wool also serves as a brilliant lightweight layer for when temperatures drop. Layer over a shirt and tailored trousers for smart office look on cooler mornings, or as a light layer for afternoon hikes over a t-shirt.

Lambswool

Usually associated as a winter fabric, lambswool is actually perfect for cooler days. The lightweight fibres create a warm layer, perfect for days spent outdoors. Naturally hypoallergenic, lambswool is incredibly soft and suitable for even the most sensitive skin.

Our collections are made using yarn from Yorkshire suppliers, Z. Hinchliffe & Sons (Est. 1766) based in Denby. Hinchliffe source the yarn entirely from the Geelong area of Australia, recognised globally as the leading providers of the world's more luxurious fibres. Only the shortest, finest fibres are selected during the spinning process which results in a beautifully soft and fluffy handle.
